Freemind (and Freeplane) do not support all the iThoughts icons natively - so exported maps often have ‘blanks’ where the iThoughts icon should be. This can be ‘fixed’ by supplying your own icon for those that are missing. The process is described in more detail at http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Icons

As an example, to support the ‘black hat’ icon in Freemind (on OSX) you do the following:

1. •Press CMD-SHIFT-G then enter the path as ~/.freemind/icons
   

2. •Copy your black hat icon png into the folder and name it itmz-icon-hat-black.png
   

The reason for CMD-SHIFT-G above is that the folder is hidden and cannot be browsed to directly from Finder.
