Creating Maps ‘Based Upon...’

When creating a new map, there are a number of options available to you:

  1. Do not base the new map upon anything (a new empty map.)

  2. Base the new map upon the currently selected branch.

  3. Base the new map upon the current map.

  4. Base the new map upon a [previous version of an] existing map.

  5. Base the new map upon the contents of the clipboard.

  6. Base the new map upon the folder structure.

The following demonstrates how to base a new map on an existing map.

The map of maps will be relative to the chosen folder. See here for more information on hyperlinking.

Choosing to base the new map upon the ‘current selection’ enables you to select a branch and turn it into a new map - as follows:

Notice how the new topic colours have changed. This is because the topic colours are actually set to ‘automatic’ (see here) and in the original map, the Rainbow Colour Scheme was enabled. Blue is the ‘default’ automatic colour if no other rules apply.

It is also possible to create a new map based on the contents of the clipboard - which may have been copied from another app. In the following screenshots, I copy text from Safari and then create a new map in iThoughts ‘Based Upon’ the contents of the clipboard. Notice how iThoughts creates a new topic for each line/paragraph.

One other ‘basis’ for a new map is the ‘Folder Structure’. This will create a new map with topics representing folders and maps. Those topics will be ‘hyperlinked’ meaning that if pressed they will automatically open the associated map.
