iThoughts can import and export v4 Novamind format files (.nmind) - Mac and Windows. We have created a short YouTube video demonstrating this capability here.

The following attributes are preserved when importing and exporting:

1. •Topic text (but not the format - bold etc.)
   

2. •Topic notes (but not the format - bold etc.)
   

3. •Topic colour (‘fill colour’ - not text or line colour)
   

4. •Relationships (including colour and arrow head)
   

5. •Hyperlinks
   

6. •Icons (limited to 2 per topic - and then only a subset of those supported by Novamind)
   

7. •Topic priorities
   

8. •Folded (collapsed) state.
   

9. •General layout (left/right’ness, descendants and sibling ordering.)
   

10. •Topic shape (limited to rounded rectangle, rectangle and oval.)
    

11. •Start Date, Due Date and Progress (% complete)
    

When exporting from iThoughts, there is a configuration setting to be aware of “Auto Layout”. By setting this value to YES, you are telling Novamind to figure out the best way to layout the map - by setting it to NO, you are telling Novamind to layout the map exactly as it was in iThoughts.

When Novamid chooses the layout, it doesn’t adhere to the left/right’ness of topics in relation to the root topic - but it does layout the map more neatly than it would have done otherwise.

The setting does not affect maps imported into iThoughts (the left/right’ness is translated correctly.)

To change the setting follow the steps below:

IMPORTANT: After changing the compatibility setting, you must re-open each map in iThoughts prior to downloading. This is because the act of opening (then closing) a map in iThoughts regenerates the appropriate format Novamind file.
